Fingering assignment techniques for beginners
on: July 26, 2013, 05:35:31 PM
Hi all,
I'm a 48-year-all piano beginner, self learning and I think I'm doing ok as a hobby to play for my own enjoyment. One of the things that I struggle is finding out sensible fingerings for music sheets. More often than not, I would find a piece of music that I love to play and find the music sheet for it without fingering notation. I guess I can take my time and experiment with the fingering myself and eventually figure it out, in my own way. I have done this with 2 out of 5 songs I have self-learned to play (the other 3 music sheets come with fingering notation). As a beginner, I doubt my self-assigned fingering. I have bought and read 3 piano books for beginners but have not found any chapters teaching fingering techniques methodically.
I would appreciate any members here can give me pointers to any resources (articles, websites, books...) on systematic fingering techniques. My prefer medium is a book so I can take time to learn. I don't mind paying for a good book as I often find the authors give more details in books.
Thanks in advance from a newbee.

Hi and welcome to Pianostreet,
You could start out with a scale/chord/arpeggio/technique book. These patterns appear frequently in many pieces. Once you are familiar with playing these patterns you will be able to easily recognize them in music and apply similar fingering. Here are a few:

There are also many discussions here on the forum about fingering in general, or for specific pieces. You could learn a lot by reading the various fingering solutions to posted problems.

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
