Contemporary Music; Rock?
on: July 28, 2013, 12:17:20 AM
Does anyone have any recommendations for contemporary piano music collections-preferably something in the Rock era?  Currently I play at an advanced intermediate/beginner advanced area, and I'd like something that's not Billy Joel or Elton John hard, but fun to play.  All I currently play is classical and though I love it, I'd like to branch out a bit!
Thank you-

Have you tried Tori Amos? She's a very capable pianist.

Tom Waits? Or maybe John Cale circa Fear. Not sure you could call it rock though. Lou Reed's Perfect Day? Something off David Bowie's Hunky Dory...
Currently learning:
Mendelssohn 19/6           Chopin 28/4
Satie Je Te Veux            Rach C#m
Poulenc Bal Fantome       Chopin 28/20
Schubert Serenade         Chopin 15/3
Chopin 10/9

Many Queen songs are in the category of difficulty you mentioned... Don't Stop Me Now, Somebody to Love, and Bohemian Rhapsody, to name a few.

Hadn't thought about Queen!  I'd looked up some of the others folk had suggested and am going to get a few of those.  Queen was one of my all time favorites as a teenager! :-)

Thanks for all your suggestions!  More are welcome too!

Could also try almost anything from Joni Mitchell.  Some of her later works (post Blue) are really jazz, and remarkably difficult, but the earlier works aren't that hard, and quite pleasant (if decidedly idiosyncratic; I find many people either like her or can't stand her stuff!).
