Chopin op.48 no.1 tips please!
on: July 28, 2013, 01:36:46 AM
Hey can someone please give me just some general tips for the piece, I haven't run into any problems yet, but I also haven't gotten to the restatement of the first theme yet, I have worked to the measure before that.
Anyway, what are some general tips and things I should focus on etc. any help is appreciated.

I like to think of this piece as easy to play,, but extremely difficult to play well. probably hands down the hardest nocturne in my opinion.. and its pretty obvious the 'doppio movimento' is what really makes or breaks this piece.

watch yundi li play this piece and pay attention to the doppio section:

there's so much going on here, but I'd like to think the key throughout this entire piece is to play relaxed,, I would always find myself tensing up while trying to keep the tempo and forward moving momentum going in the doppio (keep in mind, doppio means 'double' so the tempo is twice as fast as the 1st section)... but the key is to relax and try not to exert yourself.. and focus on accentuating the tune presented in the 1st section (the beginning) by emphasizing the melody with your RH 5th finger.
.

\\\\\\\"I like these calm little moments before the storm. It reminds me of Beethoven\\\\\\\"

Thanks for the advice, I would disagree and agree with easy but hard. Easy in comparison to a lot of other pieces but very hard in comparison to others. Luckily my octaves are really good for whatever reason so that section is a breeze, but the doppio is very tricky. When I get it up to a standard I'm happy with I'll post a video or something. I love Yundi li playing this piece

The problem with the doppio is the amount of inner stuff going on... it's SO easy to make it sound crashy and ugly.  A lot of Chopin's music will have several independent lines, but it's a real pain making that section clear.

I'd have to disagree with it 'hands down' being the most difficult... lol

For me, Op. 9 #3 in B major is NASTY.  When the tempo picks up there, the left hand is shockingly difficult.  It's also got some of those Chopin-style right hand passages that pop up a lot.

Also, Op 27 #2 in Db major... it's got RH fingerwork similar to the Barcarolle, and some really awkward stuff.

I find the Op. 48 appears difficult because of the octave passage (which isn't easy!!), and the Doppio, but I find the difficulties in those other two much more tough to handle.
