Rant: Crappy Hyperion piano recording quality
on: July 29, 2013, 03:20:20 PM
I've bitched before on Amazon about the crappy engineering job of Marc-Andre Hamelin's recordings.  I think I've bitched about it on this forum, too.  With Hamelin's soon-to-be-released recording of Busoni's late works, I'd expect that it would be pretty good.  But just listen to some samples....
https://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/dc.asp?dc=D_CDA67951/3&vw=dc

By the second sample, I immediately knew who engineered it: Simon Eadon.  He's so f-n deaf!  Can't he hear that he's muffling the treble and skewing the mid-range into the bass?  Why does the producer continue to use this deaf piece of sh*t?  Eadon cost less to hire than other engineers so cost must have been a factor.

I'm *** tired.  I'm going to sleep.
Oh, the upcoming Busoni is 3 CDs worth of crapolla.

With Hamelin playing Busoni, I would not have thought you could do a lot with it.

You have a boring composer played by a note perfect but uneventful pianist.

Not a good combination to begin with.

For some reason you have an "e" on the end of the word 'not' and you've also written the word  'but' instead of 'and' later on in the sentence. I assume these are typographical errors.  ;D

I was listening to some lovely Busoni earlier today, though.

I know you like this sludge and some Busoni I can stomach, but that Fantasia Crappystica or whatever it is called, is one of the most snore inducing piles of boredom I have ever heard.

Ah, thanks for the heads-up on this, now I know what to ask for as a Christmas present this year!

Thal and I will just have to agree to disagree, I fear.

And as for the sound quality, I rather like it. Very slightly closer than I'd have put the microphones (I reckon if you can hear the dampers lifting quite that clearly you could do with being a foot or two further away) but the balance sounds nice and I can hear clearly what's going on.

A mile or two further away would be better.

I know Busoni by his Bach transcriptions, other original works by him are meaningless including the PC.

I don't think it's the placement of the mics that's causing the toy piano sound but the adjustment of the levels at the sound board. They were mostly recorded at Henry Wood Hall and it has spacious resonance, something that I would appreciate to be in the recording.

Unlike that carefully-formed opinion, obviously
