What country are you from?

I was wondering where most pianostreet members are from. So, where are you all from? I'm from the US. Massachusetts to be specific.

Land of the Pope.

Ha,ha. That's pretty obscure. In reality, I'm not sure he was born there but his family was from somewhere else.

We won't cry for you...

I live in the area Mexico still thinks is theirs, El Norte.

US.

Someone did a pole on here years ago.  And there are website analyzers.  It's basically English-speaking countries.  US, UK, Australia, some Asian countries.  Nothing surprising, but still interesting.

So you are from the Netherlands, you are Dutch, but you are at the same time "not (very much not!) from Holland"; now whilst I accept and understand all of that (now!), some people here might not and would therefore quite likely appreciate a little elucidation from you if you're prepared to provide it!

So basically you are from the Netherlands and you are Dutch.  But you are not from Holland since Holland is a province of the Netherlands, so therefore you live in another province of the Netherlands.  Or you could be from a Caribbean island that is under the rule of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.  Please correct me if I'm wrong. :)

At the risk of going temporarily off-topic, your sign-off of "opera is when a guy gets stabbed in the back and instead of bleeding, sings" - the source of which is the American actor, writer and director Edward Francis Gardner (1901-1963, not to be confused - as well he might otherwise be in this particular context - with the English conductor Edward Gardner, OBE - b. 1974) - reminds me of Oscar Wilde and prompts me to wonder whether, had he thought up this phrase much earlier, he might have expressed it as "opera is when a guy gets stabbed in the front by his friend and, instead of bleeding, sings".

As you were...

Ignore all these linguistic nitpickers about the use of Holland vs the Netherlands. There is a common usage internationally that can't be changed.

More importantly, do you know who Herman Brood is? It just happened that the bar he frequented was the closest to my house and I never knew who he was. When I went there for coffee he liked to sit in the same area I preferred. So we got to greeting each other. He was a man of few words so for that year or so we never really spoke.

It wasn't until I was visiting a sick relative at the AMC when I saw his paintings on display in the atrium. I was ready to say something to him about his work but alas, he stopped going to that bar.

Land of the Pope.

Pope Francis is from Argentina but his parents ancestry is Italy (?) ... Italian immigrants to Argentina.

We are from that obscure former Spanish (350 years), American (50 years), Japanese (4 years) and British(2 years) colony in the Pacific .....  the Philippines.  Population - 100 millions; 80% Roman Catholic, 15% Protestant/Christian and 5% Islam.

Only country in the world, aside from the Vatican which does not allow divorce!!! :P :-[ :-X :'(
and you can easily guess ... NO same sex marriage!  >:( :o ;D

I think that's the joke.

Alternatively, they could have drawn it and labeled it, "Where rich white people go for a week on a mission trip then spend the rest of their leaves feeling good about themselves."

Born and raised Canadian!

And no, it's not always cold here.  It's 39 degrees C right now, and was 42 degrees last week!  :)

It does go around and below zero in the winter sometimes though!

Indeed it is The Netherlands, yes. Not one of the Dutch Antilles (not Anthills). It may be common usage to refer to The Netherlands as 'Holland' (just as it is usage to refer to the United Kingdom as 'England', or to the USA as 'America'), but that doesn't make it right!
Actually, 'Holland' compormises two provinces (North-Holland and South-Holland). These two used to be the most important part of what was then (17th Century, or the 'Golden Age'), which may the reason the name Holland stuck (esp. with the English, with whom we had some nautical disputes at the time).
As for the Dutch Antilles, three of those islands are now independent countries within the Kingdom (Curacao, St. Martin, Aruba), three are municipalities (Bonaire, Saba and St. Eustace).

We all knew what happened tp Herman Brood in the end but I was curious if any of his artistic work was known outside of a small circle. Although Freek de Jonge did include him in his "year end review" for 2001.
