How do I correct count?
on: July 31, 2013, 10:43:56 AM
Hello,

If I have 4/4 bars like this. How do I correct count?

I use my foot to beat the quarter on 1, 2, 3, 4

Do you count this:

1-2, 3, +, 4   /   1, e, +a, 3, 4
or
1+2+, 3, +, 4+   / 1, e, +a, 3+, 4+

to explain what I want to ask is: Do you count the quater notes 1+, 2+, 3+, 4+ or simply 1, 2, 3, 4 if the bars are combinated with quarters, half notes, 8th notes, and so on.

Thanks for your help.

Here is an online resource where you can enter the note values, see how the counting is done and hear the results: https://www.philtulga.com/counter.html
Just scroll down the page and you will see the player. :)
No amount of how-to information is going to work if you have the wrong mindset, the wrong guiding philosophies. Avoid losers like the plague, and gather with and learn from winners only.

It would depend on if I were playing or teaching.  Playing I might not count something this straightforward, but with one of my groups I would subdivide it:

1-ee-and-uh-2-ee-and-uh 3 and 4
1-ee-AND, 2 3, 4.

Subdivision is the key to precision, and doing it in the first measure helps you start the second measure fast enough.

Also, when I count out loud for students I usually clap along.
