Beethoven Sonata Suggestions
on: August 06, 2013, 06:05:17 PM
Hello, this is my first post here.
I want to start a Beethoven sonata and would really appreciate your suggestions.
...
My current repertoire:
Bach - WTC 1 - No. 2 in C minor
Bach - English suite No. 2 in A minor - 1. Prelude
Mozart - Sonata in C minor K. 457 /without the fantasy, planning to learn it/
Liszt - Tarantella, from the Annees de Pelerinage suite
Chopin - Nocturne in C sharp minor Op. posth.
Mendelssohn - Fantasy Op. 28, only the first part
Ravel - Le Tombeau de Couperin 5. Menuet /I am going to learn the whole in the next few months/
I haven't played anything by Beethoven.
...
Thanks in advance!

If you haven't played any Beethoven, I'd suggest you start off with the two Op 49 sonatas - short and relatively easy just to get you started with him.  While you are doing that, listen to all the first 20 or thereabouts on YT and pick one you like. Do that one.

The problem is that I like all of them and I couldn't choose which one will be the best to start with. I was expecting Op. 49 for an answer, so maybe I should really start with those.  :)

 Thanks for replying!

With your repertoire, Op 49 shouldn't be much of a challenge, but I always like to start out easy on a new composer - kinda get a feel for their way of writing/thinking in a not so threatening environment.

After that, you could always start at No 1 and work your way through....  ;D

I would suggest to play some sonatina or bagatelle first. Given your level, they should be easy going for you, and  they're pretty interesting, too, allowing you to become familiar with Beethoven before diving deep into his heavy sonatas.

Well, maybe a set of variations would be more appropriate... at least that's what my teacher says, and I know she is the best one to give opinion and to choose my repertoire for now, but I am also very impatient.

Variations are fine (though better may be a stretch). Just don't start with the Diabelli.
