I bet this question has been asked before, but what are your full-time jobs, or academic studies?
I'm interested in seeing what proportion of you guys are/seeking to become musicians, and how many of you are just mere hobbyists.
To start the ball rolling, I'm currently studying 1st year medicinal chemistry , yet spend most of my spare time studying and playing music. I just thought it would be pleasing to get to know each other, ya know, plus the demographics of this forum.

I have a M o Sc degree in Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering (since 1990) and I used to work as a technical writer and system designer at a telecommunication company, but the last decade I have been working from home as a freelance technical translator. I am also a fiction writer with one published novel and some short stories, but children etcetera etcetera have forced me to pause that career at the moment.

I play piano as a hobby. It is great fun, but I appreciate the fact that I don't have to make a living out of it. Sometimes I wish I could get more practicing time, though ...

I'm a springboard diver and I play piano, I am being homeschooled and taking one extra year for high school so I can improve my technique. Then I plan on attending a conservatoire
Just here to lurk and cringe at my old posts now.

I am fresh out of high school, and taking piano very seriously at the moment. I wanted since little to be a architect but now with a better understanding of the world I know that most careers are saturated plus I don't want to work to achieve someone's else's dreams.

So starting in December I am taking a software development career to work on it and eventually in my own projects, my goal is to raise enough money to start a monopoly of land in my country and cater to the low-mid classes because there are many more of those than rich people.

Apart from that I will continue to give my best at piano and try to get into a music school to study more piano and composition, late starter be dammed. If I get to become concert pianist that's all right but it isn't my top priority my top priority is to become a piano deity regardless if people know about it or not.

Also I am not planning on breeding anytime soon, I want my offspring to grow with financial security and a father that know his piano stuff not some amateur. For that reason and because I stay hidden from the world most of the time these days practicing I have all but severed most of my social ties.

The piano is my best friend... I even named him (yes him and I am not kidding), my upright Yamaha YUS1 is called Stefano.  Why a male name? Because in my language using a sentence with piano uses male pronouns.

Anyway I hope this is enough background.

How good is the pay?

Depends on ones definition of "good", of course. :-)

It's a 6-figure position (rather small company with roughly 100 developers), so I get paid much more than I need (my lifestyle hasn't really changed since I was a PhD student) and much less than I'd like to. In our company, the executives' wage isn't significantly bigger than that of our top developers, but that's only fair.
