Is Great Balls of Fire a good piano audition song?
on: August 24, 2013, 02:46:56 AM
I am trying to get into a commercial music program at a college and need two  songs (country, rock, jazz, pop, etc.) along with two classical, (I am playing Chopin Waltz in D flat and Lecuona's Andalucia). Do y'all think Great Balls of Fire would be a good choice or is it too overdone?

Edit: No "contemporary" requirement and I am not allowed to sing for audition. My apologies for inaccuracy,

Great Balls of fire contemporary ?  Are you singing it too ?   If not , then try Floyd Cramer, the one who made piano fit into pop, country , and rock. Well respected for bringing the piano to country, rock and pop.  If you are singing then you probably could do something a couple of decades younger maybe some Elton John or something. Of course there is Ray Charles - virtuoso , and a great singer.

Anything Floyd Cramer did would be excellent -- and he worked in Country, Pop, Rock and Roll, you name it.  Only possible problem: his style, if not his compositions, was quite distinctive and unique, and I wouldn't try to copy the style (unless it happens that you can do it well!).  But you might take one of his compositions -- or one of his backing arrangements -- and give it your own twist...

His style is very unique yet is easy to make fit well in many modern genres. Pentatonic scales are good to know.
