2013-2014 MTSG: Week 01 (9/7/2013)
on: August 30, 2013, 08:58:58 PM
Welcome to the first week of the music theory study group!

Obviously, there is no previous week, but I'm just making a general header that I can easily copy and paste later.

Previous Week               Main               Next Week

Readings:
BMT: Chapters 1-9
H&T: Chapter 1

About Active Participation:
Post your weekly submissions by Saturday, 12PM (noon), EST.  I'm assuming the fact that we have people all over the world contributing.  This will give everyone at least Sunday to review each other's work before working on new material.

Submissions:
I'm personally going to do:
1) A summary and notes for each chapter
2) My responses to the review questions
3) Any comments related to the reading
4) Any additional resources pertaining to our reading I may have stumbled across

Post as much or as little as you'd like, but please do post something.  I do not want to be the only one posting.

Note: In my opinion, for the bulk of Basic Music Theory (that is until the later chapters) this is completely unnecessary.

A Warning:  We start off painfully slow, but we significantly ramp things up once we start TCM.  TCM is extremely dense, but I will be moving at a pace of 3-4 chapters a week.  We'll probably keep discussion at a rate of 1 chapter a week.  If you're not in high school yet, you'll probably not be able to follow TCM.  Even if you are in high school, TCM will not be an easy read (I'm sure some college students will struggle to understand the book...).  If BMT is a review, get ahead in TCM.

I did read your post 2 times and I still could not understand what you are talking about.
Are you trying to teach music theory here in this forum?
Why don't you just start?

lojay, sorry for not having answered anything since last time: I was on holiday.
I have read these 10 chapters, and I must say they are not basic-> they are the most basic!!!

But readers, you don't have to remember everything. Grasp for curiosity chapters 1 and 9, but DOMINATE chapters 7 and 8!!! And, of course, manage to understand the lines, reading the notes of the staff, with their bemol, etc. or the rest of chapters (reading is got with practice. After years, I haven't got it xD But it's because I am not used to read music. If you are studying music, you won't have the option for skipping reading!!! jajaja

That's my short summary of the week (I have come from holidays right now... and it's too late, and have to get up early :P). However, there isn't much more... :)

No.

I am hosting a study group.  The idea is that we complete readings and post our summaries, notes, etc. for critique.

Why don't you just start?

We have!  If you haven't already, go to https://www.pianostreet.com/smf/index.php?topic=52307.0.  You can download most of the resources for free.

I'm not really sure what I should post... questions? And what do you mean by notes? I think I have already learned the first few chapters, so I don't have as many questions as of now.

Thank you for answering! :)
