Chopin's Ballade in G Minor
on: September 03, 2013, 05:29:45 AM
Hi
I am currently learning Chopin's Ballade in G Minor, in secret, and I will surprise my piano teacher with it when I am done.  (I have been taking lessons for about 8 years).  I am currently working on the second half of the piece.  I have the first section of the coda/presto con fuoco up to about 200 with minimal mistakes, and the second, longer section up to about 150 with minimal mistakes.  I know I still have a long way to go to play this fast, accurately, and artistically, but I think the speed Krystian Zimerman plays this part at is a good goal for me.  Can someone please tell me what average metronome speed he is playing at in the coda?

Here is the YouTube video:

Another question:
How can I get the "quintiplets" rhythm (5 RH notes over 6 LH) near the end correct, other than simply using a metronome (which I have been doing)?  I always seem to play it with too much space after the first note and before the last note.

Thanks

I don't think Zimmerman used a metronome. I suggest you don't either; your ears will do a much better job.

There is a discussion of the 5v6 patterns here: https://www.pianostreet.com/smf/index.php?topic=52215.0

Hello stonewalljackson,

I think this a foolhardy venture that you should consider reconsidering!

I REALLY don't think the speed Krystian Zimerman plays ANYTHING at is a good goal for you!

He is one of the world's foremost virtuosi, and you don't know how to play basic poly-rhythms yet!

Plan to 'surprise' your teacher with this piece when you're 'done' and you are going to be in for a rather nasty little surprise of your own!

You already have a teacher, so why not get your teacher to help you with this piece?

The 5 against 6 doesn't have to be mathematically perfect in this case.  Stay away from metronomes for this, it will only make your life unnecessarily complex.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach
