Works by lesser piano-oriented/known composers
on: September 06, 2013, 10:21:48 PM
I'm trying to expand my repertoire as much as I can.
I'm wondering if you guys have a sense of major (more technically challenging, substantial pieces) pieces by the following composers you could suggest?:
Dvorak
Bizet
Tchaikovsky
Shostakovich
Stravinsky
Bartok
Albeniz
Verdi

I want beautiful music that I will enjoy playing, not just technically difficult. Technically, I'm pretty much capable of almost anything I want (if i put in the effort, I could get Liszt concerto 1 together within 3-4 months). Obviously I don't want pieces like hung rhapsody 2 or la campanella, but I want something to challenge and interest me.

Tchaikovsky has a beautiful sonata in C sharp minor.
Shostakovich's sonata no. 2 in B minor is pretty cool. You can also try out some of his preludes or fugues.
That's what comes in mind.

Tchaikovsky has a beautiful sonata in C sharp minor.

And what about his "Grand Sonata in G" op. 37?
Here is Sviatoslav Richter to convince everyone that this is a masterpiece:
1. Allegro risoluto - Part 1
1. Allegro risoluto - Part 2
2. Andante non troppo quasi moderato
3. Scherzo (Allegro giocoso) and 4. Finale (Allegro vivace) at 2:50
No amount of how-to information is going to work if you have the wrong mindset, the wrong guiding philosophies. Avoid losers like the plague, and gather with and learn from winners only.

You're right, forgot about that one.
Though the C sharp minor one is better :)

Bedřich Smetana´s Concert etude g# minor "on the sea shore" is an especially beautiful encore.
You could also try his Hulán from the Czech Dances

lol

I really like the Tchaikovsky sonatas you suggested. I'll probably do one of them in my next programs. I still have to listen to Shostakovich's sonata.

OP: I wonder why you would include Shostakovich on your list (lesser piano oriented/known?) but why don't you just start by working through his preludes and fugues.

Hell yes! Pretty unpianistic to play but great to listen to.

why don't you just start by working through his preludes and fugues.

Because he isn't interested in actually playing through anything, he's just here to wind people up with ridiculous claims of his pianistic superiority and generally waste people's time.

Seriously? I know he's much better with the orchestra than with the piano (There's no comparison) but he does have some beautiful piano works.
Maybe you should try listening to more of his pieces, you're bound to find something you like.

By the way, Gliere has some amazing piano pieces you can look into.

Surely not everything, but quite a lot, I really wanted to give him a chance once. But his ballet suites are honestly the only thing I have enjoyed listening to...

I'm sorry if you disapprove of my explaining my situation. I'm quite sure I have sufficient evidence to back up the information in my first post, and, within a month, I'll be doing a concert, and I will post it on youtube. Then, you guys can all judge it for yourselves.

Dvorak - the Humoresques
Bizet - Small repertoire to choose from - see it all here
Tchaikovsky - None worth looking at IMO
Shostakovich - The Preludes, the Preludes & Fugues, 2 Sonatas, Tahitian Trot, 3 Fantastic Dances
Stravinsky - Petrouschka? BTW, do you mean Igor or Soulima?
Bartok - Allegro Barbaro, the later books of Mikrokosmos?
Albeniz - Espana, Iberia
Verdi - wrote piano music?  :o
