Liszt practice help
on: September 14, 2013, 11:47:46 PM
I've been working through Un Sospiro  by Liszt and I've been having some trouble. It is very, very "notey" and every time I sit down at the piano I sort of have this "oh crap, this is a lot of notes" type of feeling. I was wondering if anyone had any practice techniques that would cut down on the confusion that I get whenever I play it, and techniques that would help me learn this faster.

Try not to think so much about the notes. The notes are only a transcription of the music, and not the actual music itself.

once you've played sorabji, there is no such thing as 'too much notes'.
Just look for patterns and work 1 bar at a time, memorizing as you go along.

sorabji is one of the most disgusting sounding composers ever.  bleh!!
But back the question; If you aren't a good sight reader, I would suggest doing LH and then RH and then putting hands together.  Or break into small sections.  It's one of Liszts easier but more beautiful works, a very rewarding piece to play.

I would suggest doing LH and then RH and then putting hands together.

Since one of the challenges of this piece is to get all that hand crossing organised, HS is pretty much useless (putting it mildly) as a practice technique here.

well the LH is very pattern-based(so is the right hand), and the keys don't change too often. so think of it in terms of phrases?
