Fast passages problem?
on: September 20, 2013, 12:47:54 PM
Hi  ;D

Do anyone know how to practice on fast passages? or have some tips?
Some song has fast passages and for me that's always very hard. Although i use metronome to help me, i still can't get them perfectly. there still some goes wrong, or the rhythm suddenly disorder, etc.
How to fix that?

Thanks  ;D

For me, I don't feel as though I am moving very fast in fast passages.

I'm thinking quickly, and making adjustments quickly.

My advice would be to stop using the metronome. Practice your fast passages under tempo with ZERO pedal. Maintain beautiful quality of sound throughout and flawless control of the rhythm.

Can you really do that?

The metronome makes me rush, even if not consciously...and rushing in fast passages tends to lead into disaster.

My problem is that even though I know I must practice the fast passages more slowly first, it's really difficult for me to play in slower tempo...but it does help if I persist.

One thing my teacher always has to remind me is that when I have to move fast around the keyboard I must resist the temptation to jump into the keys, but move fast to the new position and then play the keys.

Patience is the key to playing fast I guess, and that's not something that comes natural to me  :(

This is super-duper important.

Well, I was taught quite a long time ago now that to succeed in fast passages you must practice them slowly and to near perfection and to not dive on big jumps. Accuracy is the important matter, then introduce more speed. As soon as it falls apart, slow it back down again and fix the problem. This may take several times over till it's also perfected at tempo. I've done it that way ever since. I may be thick headed but once I finally get a piece of information driven into my head I live by it !
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.
