Haydn Piano Concerto No. 11 - Opening Question
on: October 01, 2013, 02:11:40 AM
Hi everyone,
I have a quick question about the concerto I am working on for a few competitions which is the Haydn Piano Concerto No. 11. During the opening a few soloists have played things that are not written in the piano part. In just the Henle edition it has a written part as well but I'm positive Haydn himself did not write this part. In a competition what would be the most acceptable thing to do?

The most acceptable thing to do in a competition would be to play your absolute best!

Ha ha, yes I know that. I mean traditionally what should I do. Play in the opening section even though Haydn wrote nothing or do as most editions say? If I do the added parts could it negatively affect the competition?

Is it quite a long orchestral introduction? If it is, you might want to consider making some cuts for the competition.
I vote no. Just play the solo part.
