Is it ok to ignore legato?

I'v seen many professional pianists on youtube that ignore legato. What are your thoughts?

Learn the music as it's written then make changes if you feel the need. You better be able to argue why you make these changes, with more of an answer than "it sounds better" or "I like that way best"

What do you mean by ignore legato? As in they play staccato instead?
