How to learn pieces faster
on: October 05, 2013, 02:40:18 PM
Hey everyone,
I've played some hard pieces and can play them well eg. Pathetique sonata, Schubert impromptus etc. I'm learning Liszt's Liebestraume and Chopin's op 48 no. 1 right now. It just is really slow going, like it takes me ages to learn anything. Maybe I'm practicing it wrong? My sightreading isn't great, but that shouldn't be an issue for the music to stick to my brain and develop muscle memory. It's just annoying that my friends, for example, can learn two pieces in the time I learn one. Any tips?
Thanks
Chopin - Waltz op. 34 no. 2
Schubert - Impromptu op. 90. no. 2
Liszt - Liebestraume no. 3
Chopin - Nocturnes op. 48 no. 1, op. 9 no. 2
Beethoven - Sonata Pathetique first movement

No amount of how-to information is going to work if you have the wrong mindset, the wrong guiding philosophies. Avoid losers like the plague, and gather with and learn from winners only.

first of all, i would like to tell you to add more variety to your repertoire.  I hate it when people only do Romantic stuff, and ya i know u did beethoven, but stylistically, it's a good bit romantic

You can't learn pieces any faster than you can learn pieces.

The better you can play, the faster you can learn pieces.

The better you can play, the more there is to learn in the music.

Don't worry about learning faster. Concern yourself with playing better.  :)
