Seiler -- considering buying used -- need help!
on: October 18, 2013, 08:47:20 PM
What do people think about a used Seiler 126 upright that is about 20 years old?  The new Seiler SE 126 is listed around 37K I believe.  (It isn't the ED model -- don't think they even made those back then).  I'm somewhat hesitant buying a piano that is 20 years old.  Does anyone have any thoughts on this piano assuming it is in good condition?  Would it make more sense to buy a new Seiler ED-126 upright for around the same price?

Thanks in advance for your help.

What continent are you on? What country $?   That sounds like an enormous price in US $.
I bought a 1941 piano in 2010 with some veneer problems, and a wonderful tone, action, and pin block.  It depends on the model and condition whether a piano is a bargain or not.  I've never seen that brand or heard of it.

Seiler may not be a particularly well known brand, but they do make some very high quality pianos. It's originally a German company with a long history, but was bought by Samick in 2008. I had never heard of them until i bought a used Seiler 116cm upright three years ago, which was by far the best option for me in my local market in my price range at that time. But it was only 7 years old, not 20. There's not necessarily going to be something wrong with a 20 year old piano, especially a high quality German piano, but to be sure of its condition, you would need to get it checked out by an independent piano technician.

I've never played any of the Seiler ED models, and I'm not sure how these compare to the more expensive German models. According to Piano Buyer, they are made at Samick's factory in Indonesia.

Have you had the chance to play both pianos? If so, which did you prefer purely based on tone/touch? Putting aside age, or where a piano was manufactured, your decision should primarily rest on which is the better musical instrument according to your personal tastes. Try anything and everything else from any other brand in your price range as well, used or new. But I personally wouldn't buy a 20 year old piano without getting the all clear from a piano technician first.

Seiler is hardly making any pianos these days.  37K is beyond anything it could possibly be worth.  Steinway uprights aren't even that expensive (and their definitely not worth it).  At 37K you should definitely consider a grand from a different manufacturer as the speed of almost any new grand's action will blow any upright action out of the water.
