Have no idea where I am;;
on: October 24, 2013, 01:31:31 PM
Hello , complete new here ! although I have been lurking for weeks now
I have been learning(playing) the piano for about a year now , (six months with a teacher , six months myself) and we don't really have a formal grading system here (overseas) for piano so I am quite lost.. I never really played a scale before , though I know the major and minor scales , the chords /major / minor / aug/diminishd etc
I started learning the piano by playing easy pieces( by my teacher ) and starting
Czernys Op.189 ( now can play perfectly , again according to my teacher ) and
now I am almost done with Czernys op.849 and can play some modern pop pieces with ease
so here are some of my questions
Can anyone tell me or speculate what GRADE my skills are based on the info ( planning to study in the states next year)
and some tips on how to get better as a pianist / theorist (sadly I don't have a teacher nearby so I just set up my own practice schedule with a metronome and have been practicing hanon )
thanks

Well, I started to learn the piano 36 years ago and I had not even heard about those funny grades until one year ago, if that could be of any comfort to you ... You can look at the Piano Music section at this website where different piano pieces are listed together with their grades ...
If you don't have a teacher I recommend some of the online resources. I use Graham Fitch's "Practising the Piano" which I think is excellent for practising advice, it has strongly improved my efficency.

The eBooks are great and not expensive. But there are other good resources as well, which other forum members can tell you about. Good luck.
