help with fingering: over the rainbow
on: October 30, 2013, 11:36:14 AM
Hi,
i'm working on 'over the rainbow' from alfreds adult all-in-one course.
In the second and third measures i'm struggling to find a comfortable fingering for the left hand:

E B Bb | F Ab | G G A | Fsh F G |
5 1 ?     4  2     3 2 1    ?    2 3

At the Bb i want to play 2 because  reaching  to play the flat with the thumb feels awkward,
but then playing Ab after with 2 feels odd.

Then are both the Fsh and F played with 2?

thanks
kevin

Sheetmusic would be really helpful.

I'd suggest play the Bb 2.  I think the reasoning behind the suggested fingerings on a beginner piece is to minimize position changes.  Your first chord is 5-3-1 C major, then you move to a 5-3-1 E chord shape, and by the end you're back to C.

I would play the F# 4, but I think this editor clearly wants you to play it 3, to make a smooth move back to C position, so you want to play the G as 1.

E B Bb | F Ab | G G A | F#   F G |
5 1 2     4  2     3 2 1    3    2 1

The fingering indicated on the sheet is kind of funky, especially the 3/5 in the second measure, and the 2/4 in the third.  Any fingering that is comfortable would work; don't try to get finger legato and use the pedal.

Thank you both.
The advice on not trying for finger lagato is particularly helpful: it was trying to play
the Fsh/F with finger lagato that leading me into difficulties.
