Need advice in choosing my next piece
on: November 05, 2013, 11:37:38 PM
Hello good folks of PianoStreet.com forums,

I have never posted on here before and I just want to say that I am excited that I have finally found a forum where people take music and piano seriously!

I started playing November 2009 (almost 4 years ago next Sunday) and in that time I have learned in this order:

* Moonlight Sonata
* Fur Elise
* Schubert's Impromptu Op. 90 #4

* 'Raindrops' by Chopin
* Schubert's Impromptu Op. 90 #2

* Schubert's Impromptu Op. 90 #3

* Mozart's Rondo Alla Turca
and of course, The Bad Touch by the Bloodhound Gang for parties haha.

This doesn't include roughly a dozen or more pieces that I have composed myself.

Having a deep understanding of the many wonderful piano pieces in existence is not a strength of mine.  My natural strengths as a player are memorization skills (never need to look at the sheet music once I have learned a piece) and being able to do intricate fast runs with my right hand.  My weaknesses are that I am a lousy sight-reader (I am hopelessly unable to sight-read with any level of competency, even in the simplest of pieces), playing too many chord-dominated pieces, and that I try and use different fingerings than what the piece denotes.

Anyways, I appreciate the time for anyone that has made it this far in my post, and I would love to hear what you think might be some interesting pieces for me to try playing.

I'm guessing you aren't actually Zimmerman, so it would be more useful if the YT links you posted were of you playing.

Ideas to start on, though:

Bach - 2 Part Inventions
Debussy - one of the Arabesques or a Prelude or two
Shostakovitch - Three Fantastic Dances

Thank you for replying!  I will give all of these a listen.  And no, I am not Zimmerman - why would you think that? :)

I didn't, but the YouTube links you posted were of him playing. I was expecting to see you playing, given that Schubert's Op 90 Impromptus are already pretty well known.
