I need help expanding my repertoire
on: November 06, 2013, 01:28:26 AM
Hello people! I'm looking for some suggestions as to pieces that I could learn to help expand my current ability, I haven't played anything new for over a year, which is when I stopped taking lessons, and now am quasi-self-taught. I was learning Debussy's Suite Bergamasque Prelude and Clair De Lune, as well as Chopin's famous Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2, and a modern piano piece, Seasons by Mae (which is probably the hardest piece I know well). I really like Romantic/Impressionist era composers, namely Debussy, Rachmaninoff, and Ravel, but I have a sneaking suspicion that some of their music could be too technical for me at this point in time (especially Ravel... I have music for Jeux D'eau and it just vexes me every time I try to learn it). Would anyone have any suggestions for music along these same lines that wouldn't be too difficult to learn but would be somewhat challenging nonetheless?

Thank you!
(also, sorry if this is the wrong place, I was in the Repertoire section and kinda got intimidated by a note that said "advanced players")

Hi, sounds like we are similar in terms of ability.  I like Ravel too (but very technical yes).  But how about 'pavane pour une infante defunte'?

Or Rachmaninov's  'Fragments'?

At the moment im playing Grieg Op 43 n°1 Butterfly,  take a look at his lyric pieces, the piece im playing is not too hard but still challenging to play nicely. not sure if Grieg is classified as an impressionism or romantic.
