Looking to Build a Concert Repertoire (~Grade 8)
on: November 09, 2013, 06:18:59 AM
Hi all. I am looking to build a fairly standard repertoire of piano music to play in an informal concert setting. I don't have a set number of songs, or a set amount of time I want to fill. I just want to be able to perform at a local level, or for friends/family and have some variation.

What I am really looking for is a recommendation of other songs to learn that would fill out a 'concert' nicely. I guess I am not really sure what that even means, but most of the songs I already know are fast and/or grandiose.

Here are the songs that I have right now, that I either can play fluently or am working on playing well. For reference, I would consider myself roughly a grade 8 player (some of these are slightly above, some at grade 7). I am by no means a concert pianist but I have been playing piano seriously for 8 months now.

Chopin - Waltz in D-flat, Op. 64 No. 1 ("Minute Waltz")
Beethoven - Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27 No. 2 - Movement 3 ("Moonlight Sonata")
Chopin - Polonaise in A, Op 40 No. 1 ("Military Polonaise")
Mozart - Sonata No. 11 in A, K.331 - Movement 3 ("Rondo Alla Turca")
Brahms - Waltz in E minor, Op. 39 No. 4 ("Poco sustenuto")
Chopin - Waltz in E-flat, Op. 18 ("Grande valse brilliante")
Chopin - Nocturne No. 20 in C-sharp minor, Op. posth. ("Lento con gran espressione")
Jack Fina - Bumble Boogie
Zez Confrey - Dizzy Fingers
Anna Asch - Concertino No. 1 in C

Thank you!

Mods, feel free to delete this thread. I wasn't sure if this forum or the repertoire was more appropriate so I posted in both.

You've been playing for 8 months and consider yourself a 'Grade 8' pianist? Either you are amazingly gifted and have a vast amount of time to practice or you're possibly a bit deluded. Whilst some of what you posted is fairly straightforward (Minute waltz) I really have a hard time believing anyone could do justice to the Chopin Polonaise after such a short time, not even focusing on it exclusively but also pursuing other challenging repertoire. Of course, this may be a rather unfair judgement as we can't hear any recordings of you, but the weight of statistical evidence is on my side.

Otherwise I'm not entirely sure what you want us to say - you say it's an informal setting, none of us know the context so it's up to you to decide what your audience would like to hear. You have listed more than enough to fill a casual concert. I would hazard a guess, however, that they'd rather here something played well than watch someone struggle through the notes of a piece that may be out of their league... ;)

I've been playing for 9 years, and if you want good concert repertoire, then I recommend Chopin's fantasie Impropmtu opus 66. Other famous and easier pieces would be the bach inventions, Bachs prelude. However, with 8 months, I wouldn't attempt that. To do justice to minute waltz, you have to be skilled.

Take Your Seat! Trifonov Plays Brahms in Berlin

“He has everything and more – tenderness and also the demonic element. I never heard anything like that,” as Martha Argerich once said of Daniil Trifonov. To celebrate the end of the year, the star pianist performs Johannes Brahms’s monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko on December 31.
