A Piano Improvisation In Tiersen Style.
on: November 12, 2013, 04:46:48 PM
Hello Everyone ! Here is the recording in the Tiersen Style :
Do not hesitate to give me your opinion, even if you think it's bad.
By the way I'm looking for technical advice about composition.
I want to write a composition from this improvisation, someone to help me
?

It's definitely not bad. Many things are quite good, and some things are beautiful!
My advise for you regarding transforming your work here into a more finished composition:
Streamline what you already have a bit. See if you can fit all of your favourite moments into one, handwritten version, perhaps 3-5 minutes long.
Try to coordinate the emotional tension so that some sort of clearish emotional climax can be easily perceived by the listener on first listening.
An improvisation and a composition are quite different.
In an improvisation, we can use extremely temporary moments of redundancy in order to construct more complex musical thoughts.
In a composition, we must not waste any time at all. I don't wish to imply that you have wasted any of my time.
But 7-8 minutes of improvisation can be filled much easier than 7-8 minutes of ready-to-stand-the-test-of-time, fully-composed music.
Good work. I'm eager to hear your first revision!

Hi,
Thanks for your comments and your compliments. As I've just started to learn the art of composition, I need a benchmark for my improvisation. Your explanations are clear, and I'm trying hard to apply them to my work. Here's a first attempt in which I've included the best parts of my improvisation without too much redundancy, as you advised. I've added a kind of rising effect, which is more or less chromatic, while avoiding dissonances which are too strong.
I look forward to reading your comments and would appreciate any further advice you could give me.

Great work! Although I can hear a bit of influence coming from Tiersen, I think you have something fairly original going on.
Now you simply need to tie together an ending of sorts. Think about the underlying harmonic tensions you have created, and how you can make them resolve back to the home key.

This is a little piece which I recently composed, at just under 3 minutes. It's actually quite a big little piece though, as I managed to construct and resolve a huge amount of tension in a short time.
I believe much of classical music is simply too long and complex for the majority of people in the world today. The culture is more one of instant gratification. Justin Bieber becoming famous and wealthy over night. Classical music constantly struggling for government support and corporate sponsorship.
The golden number of 3-4 minutes for hit songs is not a bad one. As classical, modern composers, we must adapt to it.
