New Pieces
on: November 18, 2013, 04:48:18 PM
Hi all.
Seeing as this is my first post, I should probably introduce myself. I am Cameron and I live in South Africa. I am taking piano as my second instrument (I want to start playing it at first-instrument level) with saxophone as my first. I have been playing for about 6 years.
Now to my reason for posting. I have just played my ABRSM Grade 7 exam and passed with 103. I don't feel like my technique is where it should be, and so I have started playing Bach Inventions (I have not played them before). I am just finishing with number 1 before going to number 4. My repertoire for the exam was Mozart K330 (?) movement 3 which I played quite badly... Berceuse by Frank Bridge and Danza de la Moza Donosa by Ginastera.
I am looking for some nice pieces like Chopin and the above (had thought of Beethoven Op.49 No.1?) of different periods and different difficulties ranging from the Bach inventions to around grade 7-easy grade 8. I would love to begin on Chopin études because of their technical value but am unsure if I can pull them off. I have a bad habit of not finishing many pieces.
All suggestions welcome.
Thanks in advance!

I would recommend you finish Bach inventions.
After that, the Sinofnias.
I would recommend more but the I afraid you would not finish the Bach pieces
Oh alright here and this

Have you ever don any waltz of Chopin if you havent then maybe try op 64n2 or Op 69 n1,2 and why not do some Debussy start with Arabesque n1 and also Doctore Gradus AD Parnassum, both around easy grade 8 pieces.
Etude of Heller Op 46 is the closest grade 7 pieces you will find to Chopins etude specially remember there is a huge leap between Bach inventions and Chopin etudes, I personally would not waist time with his etudes for the moment, there is no value in starting something your not ready for.
for Beethoven Op49 is a good choice specially the Rondo n1 second movement is probably the most interesting technically and musically to me of the hole Op 49. if you want something harder then i would go to Op 79 it is the next on the list in terms of difficulty I would say the hole sonata is a easy grade 8.
I would just ad that all the work you do would only have real value if you work with a good teacher, he should help you to finish and accomplish your pieces decently.
