Prokofiev sonata no. 3 fingering for rolled arpeggios
on: November 22, 2013, 04:45:13 AM
I am working on Prokofiev Sonata no. 3 and have a question that I hope someone can answer! On the rolled arpeggios in the Piu Animato section (about 15 measures into it), what fingering should I use? Do you play some of these rolled arpeggios with the left hand? I cannot play these in-tempo. When I watch other pianists play it on youtube, they manage to play it in tempo and so fast that I can't see which hand they are even using... I hope someone can help me. Thanks!

You mean the "con elevazione" part in fff ?
I play the first one with one hand, and I divide the rest in 2 hands. But you have to make it quickly, the important thing is not to interrupt the continuous chord section in left hand.

Dear Blazekenny,
Thank you so much for your help! So you even divide the RH rolled arpeggios into two hands in the 3rd (e minor) and 5th (b diminished) measures of the LH rising chord section? And you are still able to make the LH rising chords sound continuous if you go quickly enough? Thank you so much!

Hey Shortfingers!  I just got your message today (I only visit the forum about once every two weeks haha).

As mentioned previously, splitting the arpeggios between the hands is MUCH easier.  If you listen to some recordings, the give themselves a bit of space to play these... the arpeggio is 'before' the beat on paper, but if you don't give yourself a fraction of a beat to play it, it'll just sound like a chunk of fast notes.  They're fast, but still need to be clear.  So, practice it slow with two hands (you'll soon realize it is MUCH more manageable this way).
