chopin e minor concerto- ekier
on: November 23, 2013, 05:08:24 PM
Can someone tell me a bit about this edition by Ekier? How does this compare to Henle and other editions? Does the edition have fingerings (I prefer no fingerings)? etc

Thanks y'all!

I do not know much about Ekier; and never heard of it.

I own two copies for the Chopin Concerti: The Henle and the Polish National edition. Both are great!

I suggest you get Henle or Polish National. Henle HAS FINGERINGS, but look for the ITALIC fingerings. Those were inserted by Chopin himself!

lol this was a long time ago.....I've had the Henle since september...and I now have the sonatas for the ekier...actually have what I'm looking for. Yeah I still need to get the concerto for ekier, and I've never seen a chopin edition with no fingering unfortunately

I have most of chopin's works in the ekier edition. I think they are great, first with all of the personal notes in the beginning. There is also the guide-type thing, its a separate packet with more notes on the music. Again, it has Ekier's fingerings in italics and chopin's in bold, which gives some nice options, and it is an urtext edition. All of the Ekiers are very nice. My edition of henle beethoven sonatas does not have very good fingerings. I don't know about the Polish National addition. The ekier chopin concerto edition, has a couple spots where the orchestra part is written in, with the notes in a little different font. Don't worry, this does not make the piano part confusing to write, and all the pages and notes are nicely spaced out. If you some clarification don't be afraid to ask:)

FWIW I'd point out that there is also the PWM edition of the concerto in the version for one piano (ed. Ekier). The purely orchestral parts are in a smaller font in the staves and are clearly distinguishable. IIRC Chopin himself played this version once or twice in Paris, either by preference or as a result of force majeure, so it's a quite legitimate work. The accompanying editorial notes to this edition are comprehensive, detailed, and clearly authoritative.

yohankwon, a little bit more info on what? The actual concerto? Or the Ekier edition? By the way, I have all of Chopin's works for piano, Ekier edition:). Do you have any other chopin works in the ekier edition?

Do you have any works in the ekier edition? The format of all of them are similar. And while they are expensive, they are pretty nice

Just the sonatas. I'm going for the ballades (I have henle for that but idk the difference between the two lol), etudes (same with ballades), nocturnes, scherzos, various pieces, waltzes, polonaises, mazurkas, and preludes.

I see that you are familiar with jan ekier chopin editions, and so am i. The concerto is the same exact format yellow/gold cover, letters from chopin in the front, etc as all of the ballades, nocturnes, waltzes etc... Anything else? Hope I could help
