Bortkiewicz's music is so rare and not many I guess has been published. What do you think of him and his works?
In my opinion, he was a great composer who composed some of the most beautiful works. Too bad he is not widely known.

There's a reasonable chunk of it on IMSLP, and some pieces still readily available in print.

He's not as well known as perhaps he deserves, but he's not exactly rare.

I only play one piece of his. It holds a very special place in my heart, though!

There are excellent recordings of Bortkiewicz's piano music played by Stephen Coombs on the Hyperion label and by C. Katsaris on the Piano 21 label.
I am very attracted to his music but unfortunately I do not have any of the scores.

While offering a crucial outlet for female expression in societies where opportunities were often limited, it also became a stage for complex gender dynamics, sometimes subtle, sometimes stark. From drawing-room whispers in the 19th century to the thunderous applause of today’s concert halls, the story of women and the piano is a narrative woven with threads of remarkable progress and stubbornly persistent challenges.
