HELP---YAMAHA CLAVINOVA CLP-550
on: December 02, 2013, 05:58:22 AM
Hello everyone,

I am new to the site and know nothing about pianos/keyboards so please forgive my horrible music language :)  My boyfriend borrowed the Yamaha Clavinova clp-550 from a family member to use for music producing and it stopped working after a couple of months.  I know the keyboard is about 10 years old, but we are in one of those situations where it would have stopped working sooner or later but stopped working in our possession.  There are about 10 white keys and five or six black keys in the middle of the keyboard that stopped working.  Every key around those keys works fine.  Any ideas?  Cost for repairs?

Also since the piano is more that 10 years old, we were just thinking of buying it off of the family member.  How much do you think one of these would sell for?  I've seen from $200-500.

Find repair and get estimates before you purchase not after if to purchase at all. Not sure but this link may help: https://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/Service/ServicerLocator/0,,VNM%3DLIVE,00.html

That said , it's an older unit the owner may well understand the situation given it's age. Discuss it don't hide the situation. It broke on you guys watch but it may have broken anyway. It's not as though your BF deliberately did this. Don't purchase out of guilt !
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

It played too much rock and roll where the center of the keyboard pounded out 1,5, and 4 triads 8 to the bar. Get a new keyboard. Guitar Center has daily specials.

We figured we would just buy it off of her anyways even though we would have to fix it.

I don't think I would be wanting to purchase a 10 year old broken electronic piano or any other electronic device for that matter. But to each their own.

BTW, the CLP550 is not ten years old. It came out in 1988. It could be as much as 25 year old!

When Practice Stagnates – Breaking the Performance Ceiling: Robotic Training for Pianists

“Practice makes perfect” is a common mantra for any pianist, but we all know it’s an oversimplification. While practice often leads to improvement, true perfection is elusive. But according to recent research, a robotic exoskeleton hand could help pianists improve their speed of performing difficult pianistic patterns, by overcoming the well-known “ceiling effect”.
