I just want to play better but I fail! plz help me
on: December 06, 2013, 08:55:14 AM
I'm a 28 yrs old piano student and a kind of self taught musician.all I want is to know how I can improve my skills and become a better pianist.I have played these pieces till now : (in order of time of being played)
Beethoven's fur elise(When I was 15)
Mozart's Turkish march(when I was 16)
a few one part inventions of Bach(when I was 17)
Chopin's etude op 10 no 12 (when I was 18)
Chopin's first ballade( when I was 19)
Liszt's La campanella(when I was 21) watch my playing at

Liszt's dream of love ( when I was 21)

some of Czerny's etude op 299 (when I was 24)
and now at 28 yrs old I have backed to Bach inventions again and also some of Mozart's sontatas.I think that instead of improving,I am deteriorating and feel really disappointed with my piano playing.
my question is how can I improve my skill? does it really need to play etudes like czerny's? Will I imrpove just by playing Chopin's and Listz's etude ( the pieces that I like, not the Czerny's mechanical pieces)?
Please tell me what I need to play,I'm totally confused!
Thanks.

Your La Campanella was terrible! You stumbled almost fifty times!

You need to play pieces which you can play WELL. Otherwise you will not improve.

Simple as that!

You probably need to go right back to the beginning and work on Bach 2 part inventions.

Learn to play more musically!

I haven't heard this piece before, but after listening to a few interpretations, especially the link that you yourself posted, it is obvious that you aren't ready to play at this level yet. You might think it's embarrassing to "downgrade" to a lower level, but it's better to play a piece effectively, musically, and smoothly. Karen Mehrabian was ready, and tackled the piece well. You, however, pushed the level and played it choppy and sloppily. Music is more than finger gymnastics. You have to make it a melody. After all, that is the whole purpose of music.

Actually, aside from the piano being in dire condition, the Liebestraum was played quite musically, within the limits of your technique.

It's better when giving a performance to pretend you don't notice any small mistakes that may occur. These small 'flukes' still happen to much more advanced artists, but we usually don't notice them. If you draw attention to it, by stumbling and restarting from the place before the mistake occurred, everybody will notice.

I listened to and watched your Liebestraum video.  It's difficult to tell, between the bad recording quality and my bottom-of-the-line speakers, how good it may have sounded in person.

You have a good ear for timing in expression, and clearly have the diligence to read complicated scores.  But it looks to me (and yes, I'm trying to judge your touch entirely by eye,) that you only really know how to play forte.  I can tell you're thinking very musically, but your technique is just not up to reproducing what you're hearing in your own head.

You're a good musician, and deserve to find yourself a piano teacher.
Beethoven: An die Ferne Geliebte
Franck: Sonata in A Major
Vieuxtemps: Sonata in Bb Major for Viola
Prokofiev: Sonata for Flute in D Major

Find a copy of Gyorgy Sandor's "On Piano Playing", from Schirmer Books. It is out of print, so you'll have to pay a fair amount for a copy in the aftermarket. It will tell, show and explain how a score should be interpreted as a set of instructions for gestures, not just for notes.
He explains how the entire body is used in the service of piano playing. Look on amazon.com or eBay for copies of the book.
it changes my life, and made me a much better teacher and player. It cando the same for you1

p.s. you are biting off more music than you can chew, but this book will tell you just why that is so, and what to do about it, not just tell you to find easier music...!

that teacher that u posted failed miserably at la campanella, so unmusical
your second posting of la campanella was better, but ur still not ready.  it's a piece that only extremely talented virtuosos can play

Just keep playing pieces.  Work on technique.

If it's not perfect the first time you learn it, don't worry.  Just keep working on things. You get better over time.

A teacher wouldn't hurt, but if you don't want one, just keep taking in advice and improving things.
