Mine would have to be Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff. Prokofiev really gets me excited when I hear his music and Rachmaninoff does as well.

No. Galina Ustvolskaya. She did compose.

Pupil (and sometime probably more) of Shostakovich, who said of her "It is not you who are influenced by me; rather, it is I who am influenced by you".

It may take several listenings, but it grows (and grows) on you.

Mussorgsky. Pictures has challenged me for 31 years. I'm getting the hang of it, played through it for an audience (charity dinner workers) last Saturday.
You don't need an orchestra to do Pictures, it is a solo.

What about Balakirev ? I still like Islamey and particularly Lang Lang's rendition of it. Those two preferences alone should render my opinions on both forums null and void for a while.

It's too hard for me to choose.  There's Scriabin, who basically sponsored experimentation that lasted until 1930 or so, whose use of color was and perhaps is unparalleled.  There's Roslavets, who built upon Scriabin's late works, developing a rigorous framework to make some of the most liberated-sounding music I've heard, luscious one moment, caustic the next.  There are composers I admire, like Grigory and Julian Krein, whose nearly every work I enjoy.  And then there's Feinberg, a great assimilator, extremely innovative in his treatment of the piano, almost to a Godowskian level, to me, whose music meets that hard to find criterion as being both exploratory and singularly expressive, but who, due to societal pressures, toned down his wondrous language and composed less and less as his life went on, unfortunately.

Ok, he may be a Brahms for the russian. But still, it's Medtner. I'm not judging on the actual worth of his music, but merely by popularity. Proko's concertos, Scriabin etudes and preludes.... To me they seem much more played than Medtner Tales and Sonatas. Never heard Medtner live actually. What a shame.

Liadov just called me

He told me to tell OP to go wreck himself.

Liadov is pretty sensitive

He always gets mad when he's forgotten
Always
Stanchisky(? is that how you spell it?) is right next to me
he also told me to go wreck yourself

Lyapunov also wants to have a word with you.

Man you're screwed.
They all want to beat you up.
Especially Liadov.
Most definitely Liadov.

Only if you're looking for trouble.  ::) (Though great to see Kosenko get an outing).

Can we add someone alive to the list?

Rodion Shchedrin? Boris Tchaikovsky?

(Yes, I know Kapustin is still alive, but he's the only one)
