my exam's in a week
on: November 14, 2004, 05:45:51 AM
and so if someone could give me some help on a few last minute things that'd be super

1) i'm calm before playing in front of people (we had a playoff at my teacher's place today) but when i start playing i lost a lot of control over what my hands are doing- they're generally fine and hit most of the right notes and all but my mind has no control over what my hands are doing and it's really annoying- so how do i manage to regain my control?

2) when i use the soft (left) pedal the nerves in my left leg shake like crazy and that's annoying as hell

3) any tips on what to do with my pieces in this last week?

i'm not feeling nervous at all before i  play, well not mentally anyway. maybe i am physically and that's what these problems result in. thanks for your help

Well, when you get to the last couple of days, play your pieces more in bits and pieces rather than the full thing. I have a very bad habit of repeating a mistake if i make one at a particular spot. If I goof up a particular spot today with a performance or exam the next day, I'll most probably goof up the very same passage the next day. That's one! Plus, eat a bar of chocolate about 20 mins before u have to play (for some ENERGY  ;) ) And don't OVERPRACTISE!!!!

I would suggest you to not do your exam while you're in digestion, otherwise all the blood flow woudl be redirected to the digestive system leaving your brain and arms with les blood flow: hence spacy feeling
I wouldn't suggeste either to eat a chocolate bar, as it contains refined sugar that because of its lack of fibers cause a sugar spike raising your glycemia too quickly, resulting in a glut4 atrophy and insulin secretion redirecting too much glucose on the cell membrana and leaving your brain without a sugar supply
That would eventually result in hypoglyicemia symptoms and spacy feeling of headache or even fainting

Now, eat something sugared that is not refined and that is absorbed and supplied slosly in to the blood stream
Trail-mix 90 minutes before the exam would be good as you have the energy of carbohydrates but they're converted to glucose quickly so during your exam you will have a steady glucose supply for your brain and you won't ever run out of ATP
The night before eat light, not overdo with the fats (but get some EFA though) as you want to sleep properly and you don't need a hard digestion ruining your sleep
Have many veggies, veggies and veggies again
You want to consume fibers to have your bowel empty the next day, you want to consume minerals and vitamins so that you don't feel tired the next dat, you want to consume enough phytochemicals to help with your metabolic processes
Drink a lot of water

I have the same problems as tash. When I am nervous, my legs tremble like a *** epileptic. I almost lose control of the pedals.

Me too, it's terrible  :(
The first time it happened (a cousin of mine asked me to play something for her) I though I were going to have a seizure
My right leg trembled so much that it was hitting the base of the keyboard and started hurting
Eventually I put the whole weight of my leg on the pedal so has to hold it
When I asked this I found out I was the only one that had this scary leg trembling while nervous or emotionated
Now, I'm happy to find you that you have the same strange problem

oh well now i feel very informed about eating habits before exams- no i won't be eating chocolate cos chances are i'll feel like vomiting, and it's at like 10am and i don't eat chocolate before 10am cos it's too early!

yeah i tend to just press the pedal rather hard to try control it, and then the whole piano ends up making some vibrating noise and i'm like ahh i hope nobody can hear that...

but thanks all of you, i've learnt something new for the day!
