VIDEO: Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 1st mvt
on: December 10, 2013, 05:05:46 AM
Hi everyone,
this is my first time performing Rach 2 with an orchestra. We didn't have much rehearsal so there are some untogether parts, but mostly I'm worried about how to improve my solo part. Any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Congratulations!

You delivered a very solid performance!

That is certainly a complement, but it was also the downside of the performance, for me.

It was a bit too solid overall. More freedom with your part so that you can really communicate with the ensemble would have allowed a more flexible, expressive, and formidable interpretation.

Thank you awesom_o!!
Your advice is very helpful to me, and I really appreciate all your replies to my posts!!
For this performance, I think the solidness is mostly because of my nervousness. Are most performers able to still do what they normally do even under stress or are they just able to get rid of most of their nervousness temporarily? It's a problem that bothers me in a lot of my performances. Thanks again!!

Very beautiful! This is one of my favorite concertos and you certainly do it justice. But like awesome said, lighten up! You can already play the piece well, so why not have fun with it? But I understand your nervousness. I hope that someday I can play the concerto as beautifully as you did :) great performance.

Sincerely,
Logan

I posted what I thought were helpful suggestions on the actual youtube comments section but you deleted them  :P

For anyone's benefit, I'll paraphrase it: Emotional maturity. You play it solidly and well. Great performance and all the fundamentals are there.  The next step is falling in love, having your heart broken and then coming back to this piece and playing it with the fire, delicacy, drama.... the emotional palette that Rachmaninoff demands and one that only certain life experiences can provide you.
