Next Beethoven sonata
on: December 16, 2013, 02:39:39 AM
Ok so I started with very little experince and jumped into beethoven sonata op 2 no 3, after a year i finished the first movement.  I am thinking of stopping and going to something else for a year or two until my fingers are strenghened, i'm thinking either Op 31 no 3 (The hunt)  or Op 31 no 2 Tempest.  I want to do a beethoven sonata so please suggest next ones i could play.  I have a very good teacher, and he suggested Tempest, any other ones?
Thanks!

Op.2 no.3 is a very difficult sonata.  A year is a long time to spend on one movement.  Have you accomplished any of the easier ones? Like the two op. 14?  Op. 2 no. 1?Or get a taste of later beethoven and try op. 90, though this is not as easy as it sounds.  The tempest is a good choice, too.  Easier then the first one of the same opus.  But i still think one of the lesser known "easy" sonatas would be good for you now.  If you have faith in your teacher, go with what he says.

The tempest is no laughing matter though, it's not impossible by any means, but it's still rather difficult, especially the second movement. The third movement is easiest for me. 1st second hardest 2nd movement is nightmarish

I play tempest mov 1 and 3, that's 90% of my beethoven, and let me tell you they're fairly doable. The good thing about these, is that you can play them well even if you're not a pro.

The same doesn't apply to the second moovement, which I dont want to play.

I'm going to disagree a bit, I'm not saying either of those movements are super hard technically. But they are no walks in a park. The hard thing about them both is the phrasing and the details and the super minute things that really make it good. So I don't think you can just play then well if you're not a pro. I'm not saying you have to be a pro to play them well, but it is definitely a large task to play it well.

What exactly did you have difficulty with in the first movement of Opus 2 No. 3?  Was it technique?  Was it the sheer length of the movement?  Was it inexperience with Beethoven?  I will trust your teacher's assessment of your level and assume Tempest is appropriate.

Offhand, I would suggest either of the Opus 27 sonatas, Opus 28, or Tempest, both for building technique and getting experience with Beethoven.  All of them are significantly smaller than Opus 2 No. 3.  Opus 31 No. 3 is tough; quite a bit more difficult than the Tempest and probably not a good match for what you are currently looking for.

I agree with birba. An year is long indeed, for a single movmeent. Also, why drop it when you have not even learned the whole piece? You will never be a good pianist like this. Yes, I would take birba's suggestion. Op 14, Op 2 No 1, as well as Op. 10 No 2 and Op. 10 No 1 are good pieces to look at.
