Bush & Gerts Chicago
on: December 26, 2013, 05:57:33 PM
I have an upright Bush & Gerts Chicago in good condition. The serial number is 5756. I was wondering if someone could tell me what year it was manufactured and if it has any value. It is a beautiful piece and I dearly love it but all of the children have moved out and they were the players. Hate to part with it but it takes up a lot of room.

The best I can offer is that it is obviously early in the production run of these pianos. They were in business from 1884 till 1942 and by 1889 the serial numbers running already in the 5 digit range. I would conclude from that that your piano was probably built around 1885 or 86.
Value is what ever you can get for it, literally depends on your local market. In some you would be lucky to get someone to haul it away without charging you and in others it could be a popular enough model to have someone want to purchase and restore it. The latter is rather a rare market though in this day and age. The name doesn't come with any inherited value even though they are good pianos. The value is possibly in the ornate nature of some of them and obviously emotional value to some certain individual too.

Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.
