It is just me or the forum is kinda dull?
on: January 15, 2014, 03:49:30 AM
Like bread without butter or jelly, I like it in here because there is very knowledgeable and fun people to discuss with but beyond that the forum is kinda meh...

Like I don't know it is missing a certain oomph.

go to pianoworld then!

what do you mean by 'oomph'? do you mean this forum lacks zest and enthusiasm or perhaps you are bored of the mundaneness of life and want special events? or maybe, it's because you have been scaring away any new users with your immature threads of sexual innuendos?   :P

I agree that it's dull.  The impression I get is that you come here to poo once a day and then go back to your work, though some people are more constipated than others.  It's not like a park where you can do a lot of things and meet a lot of people.  Here, it's very static.  I mean, I've been a member for like 10 years and nothing has changed.  Members come and go but this forum has remained almost exactly the same.  There are a couple of new subforums but that's it.  The font is the same, the black and gold color, etc.

It may have to do with the fact that this place isn't as inviting as PianoWorld, most simply due to the impression of the black and gold.  Blue is a more inviting color which is why it's most common in forums that receive the most traffic.  If PF changed its colors, it would definitely raise the feeling of being smothered.  Black just doesn't do it.

I concur, is kinda a dead world, a world where his Gods are dead and the time doesn't change at all...

The land in which Pianist lived was not moving, but not dead either, nor had it stopped.

It really needs a revamp, speaking of which is there any mods here? I think its the first forum where I am yet to glimpse even some manifestation of the staff

You know, even though I was aware of PianoWorld almost since I joined PianoForum, I never created a PW account.  The reason: PF has more knowledgeable people (in the past).  If I wanted advice, I knew I'd get better answers here than anywhere else.  Though recently, the quality of replies has tumbled into the realm of PW with vague, unsubstantiated claims where emotion is more important than reason.  Emotional support is one thing.  A solution to a problem is another.  Feel good talk does nothing for the later.

And yeah, due to the lack of staff/moderators, this forum is completely member driven.  Without mods to guide discussions, there is frequent bickering that quickly leads to off-handed insults which leads to direct insults and attacks.  This makes PF negative and I'd rather not reply to threads where certain members have posted because I know they'll disagree and hurl insults.  It didn't use to be this way.  And to be honest, I now get anxious to threads I've replied simply because I know someone will disagree without any kind of substantiation and make direct or indirect attacks.

I have noticed in some threads, for a recent example the more/better one that some member have a less developed hippocampus and cannot refrain from totally off topic aggressive behavior.

While that is quite annoying I also value a lot as said previously the wisdom of certain individuals (you're included so rejoice, REJOICE I SAY!) is priceless, but I would really like to see:

1.Avatars for users, for color and a more personal touch, preferably all fo them scaled to a x measure so we don't have mismatched sizes.

2.More color and spirit.

Also I know I don't play like freaking Bach but in the Audition Room even good recordings with 120 messages, most of those are from 2-4 people at most.

Da hell... we needz ur fidbakz.

Piano World wants your birthdate, so they can sell it.  I won't sign up.  Facebook neither.
Wait until I get enough tech toys to make recordings. Then everybody can shout at me.  I'm telling you, I play JS Bach inventions like Willie "the Lion" Smith.    I'm dreaming up the costumes for video now.  Then there are the props I could use!  Youtube I am so shocked, since I got the ability to listen to it December 18.  Most of the stuff has a record cover or announcement as the visual! I'll at least show my generic face. And then there are the music holding assistants!  Three pages on the rack aren't enough for me, I have assistants that can hold 7 pages up.
Meanwhile, look at Mambo Kurt's disco ball, his dancing with the audience, his flying leap into the crowd. He can, actually, also play the organ.
Then make us some piano recordings that don't involve white tie and tails.
Have you ever found a really BAD piano at someone's house, then cut it up and put it in the garbage can for them? Very entertaining, all the sparks from the saw and body grinder.  I've done it.  Wear safety glasses, and leather clothes.

It is a little dull at times.  Except, as noted, a few folks who seem to have very strong opinions about things.  On the other hand, I find that it tends to reasonably serious or interesting questions (most of the time) and there are enough really good and well-informed folks who read and post to make it worth while; I rarely come away without having learned something interesting or useful.

Dull is not necessarily bad...

Indeed, but while I don't condone it I don't think stagnation is the way to the future.

I wonder if the reason this place isn't as dynamic as others is due to the black color.  The psychology of color has revealed a number of interesting tidbits, especially the one about affecting mood.  Maybe that's why classical music is considered stuffy, because musicians traditionally wear black.  Piano's are also black.  I may have to do some research to find evidence for this.

Are you insinuating we all paint our pianos, bright pink and wear frilly sombreros?

Well, here's one interesting tidbit about the color black:

"One study that looked at historical data found that sports teams dressed in mostly black uniforms are more likely to receive penalties and that students were more likely to associate negative qualities with a player wearing a black uniform."

https://psychology.about.com/od/sensationandperception/a/colorpsych.htm

Hmm... so maybe I'm right that black is stuffy. :o

I think it's just yo.... Oh wait, you don't have access to the other area of the forum, do you?  Well, that explains it.  But nevermind.  Forget I said anything.  It's just really cool though.

Haha... I was joking, but actually I see there are other parts of the site available.  Nils or someone put up the app/icon front page.  I'm locked out of lots of things.

I just joined, and so my impression still hasn’t fully formed about the site. I like what I’ve seen so far.

But, what I’ve noticed as the main difference between smaller/intimate forums and those that are gigantic, with what seems to be tons of activity, new members, etc…is that the gigantic boards tend to have more ‘’off topics,’ and by that I mean…topics catering to sexual nonsense. (mainly) And people e-fighting.

Doesn’t matter the site I’ve visited…it could be about cooking. It could be about exercise. It could be about math. Does not matter. The sites that had the most ‘action’ were the sites that had the most off topics, the most ‘trolls,’ and the most sexual content. On such sites, it’s as though the moderation staff was asleep.

I’ve been to forums (other than relating to music) however, that are more intimate, and whereby the majority of the threads are clean, and ON TOPIC.

I enjoy gigantic sites, too…but just think that if you want answers to questions, without having to weed through sexual innuendo, trolls, and other distractions…smaller sites are where it’s at.

Just my take as a newcomer here.   :)

Yea that is the thing with me. I tend not to come here often due to the black background it just looks like I am on some sort of spam site.
