Was this a good deal for this piano?
on: January 27, 2014, 02:58:17 AM
Hello, I just acquired a piano and I'm asking if you think it was a good deal. The piano is a Shigeru Kawai, SK-5, 6' 7". It has a beautiful tone, awesome action, and just about anything you could ask for in a piano.
I bought the piano itself for $40,500, with tax it came to around $43,800. The dealer told me this was a great deal, but I'm still wondering, was this a good price for this piano?
Thank you in advance for any replies!

If you are thrilled with the piano, why does anything else matter?
You loved the piano, and you bought it for a price which you were willing to pay, that the dealer was willing to sell it for!
Congratulations on purchasing a very fine instrument!
Post pictures and recordings, please!

As awesom_o said, you have your piano. You signed on the dotted line. Now go enjoy your piano! If this is the piano that spoke to you, celebrate the fact that you found it and had the funds to pay for it. A few years down the road and that price will be distant memory.
So what if you could have got maybe a few dollars better deal. Are you really going to return this piano and go hunting for another just to save a little bit more?
Congratulations! Go play your new piano!

Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.

You don't get a deal on a piano. You fall in love with a piano. If your lover is a good deal, so much the better -- but who really cares? And who is to define "good deal" in that regard?

It's rather late to be asking the question, eh?
Anyway, pianobuyer.com shows the MSRP at $77,800, with a suggested price of $63,200. That's for a new piano. How old is yours?

Enjoy your piano congrats on the purchase! S Kawai I have never seen but I have seen pics and youtube before and they seem awesome.
A piano instructor I know has a K Kawai grand piano (lower level of course) but the piano is just fantastic. She keeps it in good regulated shape and it is a pleasure to play it.
I can just imagine how nice a S Kawai would be like.

Agree that it's late in the game to be second-guessing price. That being said, if it makes you feel any more at ease, my personal opinion (for whatever that's worth - ha!) would be "yes- you got a good deal."
