liszt/schubert erlkonig - getting tired
on: February 02, 2014, 09:02:37 PM
Hi everyone.

I used to play this piece ok and now I'm revisiting it.

I remember clearly my right hand would get very tired doing those repetitive octaves.  It would take a ton of commitment to play it all the way through at tempo. And if you asked me to play it twice back to back it would not be possible.

Does anyone know how to stay relaxed in the right hand during those repetitive octaves?

Is it possible to be so relaxed so you can play this piece 50 times over and over without a fatigue issue or is everyone struggling with it?

Thanks :)
Noam

"Pieces like Erlkonig cannot be played from the wrist alone because it gives us neither the power nor the speed required. The wrist alone is to be used only in light graceful places. Heavier octaves put the elbow and shoulder into action. A striving for economy of force and the least possible fatigue will produce this division of labour unconsciously." Hofmann
