questing to those who have played at a large hall
on: February 03, 2014, 05:13:38 PM
Hi,

I have always wondered if when I am playing a PPP passage at home, I am working harder at making the sound super soft compared to a pianist on stage at a large hall.

For example, if I play first movement of moonlight sonata at home I have the una cords down, and I play very softly the piano is whispering.

At a large hall, do they play that softly as well? Would anyone even be able to hear it? Or does the pianist take into consideration the size of the room and adjusts their dynamics accordingly?

Always wondered this.

Noam

To a certain extent you do take the hall into consideration -- but if you have a decent concert grand (there is a reason those things are big) and a decent hall and a decent audience, there isn't all that much difference.

Now if half the audience is texting, and the other half talking...
