Grade 10 easy
on: February 03, 2014, 07:11:50 PM
My teacher is a great pianist and I really like him. The problem is that he does not want to work on the pieces I want because "I am not ready for them yet".
I came to this teacher 3 years ago after getting 90% on my grade 8 RCM exam. And yes, maybe I am not ready for the difficult pieces yet, but I am not going to be a professional pianist. I am graduating high school so, my regular piano lessons will have to stop anyways.

In short, I want to take grade 10 RCM exam and I am on my own.

I am looking for the list of the easiest RCM 10 pieces I can use for the exam.
I know this does not sound right but I need to take this exam no mater what. I tried to talk to my teacher several times but the response was "if you want to do it you are capable of doing it yourself and I don't want to spend my time doing those pieces in class"

Any suggestions?

Try and pick pieces you Enjoy - otherwise you will not enjoy the process

Have you considered seeking instruction from another teacher in order to prepare you for this exam?
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Your teacher doesn't want to help you learn the pieces that you want to learn? Mind dazzling.

You're nearing the end of high school and don't plan on taking more private lessons - you should find a teacher who wants to help you accomplish what you want to accomplish during the short time you have left.  If I may ask, why do you feel "need to take the exam no matter what"?  Has it been your musical goal to finish the numbered stages of that curriculum?  (If so, in my view that's a perfectly fine way to structure your musical development.  The RCM syllabus is by no means poor in its breadth.)  Personally, if I were a teacher with a student at your stage, I would invest my time broadening my student's appetite for different kinds of music, expanding their horizons.  I don't know how well preparing for an exam curriculum complements that.

I remember that my teacher had a bit of a reaction against exams just because he'd had to deal with too many parents who were determined that child's progress be somehow measured.  But it's different when the motivation comes from the student.

In any case, which "the easiest pieces" are depends a lot on what the strengths and shortcomings of your individual technique are.  What have you worked on in the past few years, and where do you feel your strengths lie?
Beethoven: An die Ferne Geliebte
Franck: Sonata in A Major
Vieuxtemps: Sonata in Bb Major for Viola
Prokofiev: Sonata for Flute in D Major

Why do you need the take the exam? Do you have specific need for a certificate? Why not take the advantage of teaching now that you can and evolve as a pianist? Have you considered the possibility that your teacher is right, you are not ready and would only waste a lot of time learning a few pieces (possibly poorly) instead of getting better at playing?

You could try entering some of the grade 10 RCM pieces into the pianosyllabus.com website to see if any get graded much lower in other syllabuses.  By and large they should be quite comparable but I did notice that some of the Bach Preludes and Fugues (850, 866, 876) appear at a much lower grades elsewhere. No doubt there are other examples.
