Digital piano recording
on: February 07, 2014, 03:04:12 AM
I have a Yamaha clavinova clp 430 piano, and sometimes i think its out of tune. Is it normal? I didnīt mess with transposition or anything. And one more question, is there any device which i can record my music, besides the one that comes with the piano, for better quality?

Thank you very much.

Did you try a factory reset?

There may be a setting to change A to something other than 440.  There may also be alternate temperaments other than equal temperament.

What is it about the recording that you feel is lacking?  Are you recording directly to WAV files?  If your piano does capture its own sound in uncompressed WAV, there is really nothing that an external recording device will do to improve that.  Recorded sound is only as good as the source.  You could try recording off of the line out jacks and see if that sounds anything different.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

You could run through the menus and see how it is set up. Depending how I tuned my acoustic grand piano, I may change my Kawai digital accordingly. Right now it's set at 440 and an older world tuning method which off hand without looking I forget the name of. I had set it there for an old Christmas Carol I was doing back at Christmas, it also fits Chopin nicely. I like it so leave it for now. I could see how someone if they sat down at the piano might think it was off a bit because it is not a modern sound. However in your case, worth a trip through the menu to see where yours is set at presently, assuming you haven't already.

Recording suggestions can be all over the place. Mine? First listen to your recordings on good headphones. Not a cheap set of gaming headphones or some such thing that cost $25 or less. Start there, figuring any sound system from that point on will sound different in some way but the headphones probably will be free of common sound system mistakes up front. Then you can move on from there.. Some folks like recording live vs internally.
Depressing the pedal on an out of tune acoustic piano and playing does not result in tonal color control or add interest, it's called obnoxious.
