left hand in Mozarts rondo kv 485
on: February 22, 2014, 06:49:59 PM
Hi,
In quite some pieces in the left hand, like the Mozarts rondo for instance (see imslp for score) , the left hand has 4 1/4 notes to play, on top combined with 1/8 notes.
I always have problems synchronizing the double notes, holding the 1/4 note while continuing playing 1/8s.
It has to do with lifting the pink, if we play 53, and pushing the key back in to double it with the 1/8. I explain the best I can being dutch speaking.
And this on a quite continuous basis. Also in one of the Beethoven sonates there is such a passage, but still more difficult.
I try to rehears the upper voice first, then the lower one, and then both together slowly. But still there is something missing, reason why I'm not at ease with these passages. It's the synchronisation of lifting and pushing, while the push falls together with the push of the 1/8s.

So, that's it. Seems easy, but it isn't. Welcome all suggestions how to approach this.

Take it both hands together, slowly.  In fact, this is one of the few places where I might even suggest a metronome (normally I detest the contraptions).  Set the metronome to the eighth notes, not the quarters, but keep it slow and practice getting the notes exactly on the metronome clicks.  If you don't have a metronome, you can try tapping one foot in time to the eighth notes.

But do it both hands together.

When you get the notes together properly, then you can begin to pick up the tempo to where you want it to be -- but if it falls apart again, slow back down and work on it some more.

In time it will become second nature to you -- but it may take a while to get the nerves and muscles in the two hands to really work together.

Thanks,
But we are talking here just about the left hand, right ? As you are only talking about both hands together I want to make sure we talk about the same thing. The 5th pink plays the lowest quarters and 3 and 5 eights, play a second voice together with  the bass line in the pink, all played by the same left hand of course.
So gou propose to split them up in 2 hands, and at the end... you don't talk anymore how to go back to the 1 hand.
That's why I was bit confused.

But it might make sense. For me is the point where 3 goes down, and 5 goes up and falls down together with 3 the point.

Regards,
Ignace
