Kapustin sonata 2
on: March 07, 2014, 05:44:38 PM
Hello everyone!

I discovered Kapustin yesterday, and I found his music to be incredibly fun to hear and see. I'm now considering learning Kapustin's second piano sonata, and I was wondering if it is a good competition piece. I don't have time to learn things that I won't use for competitions, so this is pretty important to me.

I think it would be a fantastic competition piece. The sonata has lots of balance, especially with the slow 3rd movement which allows you to demonstrate pretty much your understanding of dynamics and control of pedalling - an excellent way also to highlight your phrasing. The outer movements give you plenty of fireworks but they do require some overtime on the piano since the jazz idiom has awkward syncopations. If you pull it off, there's no way anyone can say it wasn't a good job. The whole thing is wonderful!

I am certain that it is copyrighted, so you would be better off buying the sheet music.

Thanks, that's what I needed to know!

Also, how hard would you say the piece is compared to his other sonatas? Ignore this question if you don't like it.

I'd start with the last movement.  If you can't play it at speed, you can't play it at all.  I started learning it a few years ago but I could never get past the first couple of bar in the final movement.
