It just sounds wrong!
on: March 08, 2014, 11:37:10 PM
Has anybody ever played anything correctly but it still sound terribly wrong rhythmically speaking. i am learning Chopin's Nocturne op 27 no 1 and i know that im playing everything right but it just sounds wrong when i play it. When i record myself playing it it sounds very good but when im actually playing it i get distracted by how off it sounds. What do i do?

Whoa, you just described my experience with the second section of Chopin's Military Polonaise.

I'm like, "This can't be wrong! I'm playing the right notes!", but when I heard a recording, it sounded pretty good.

I don't know why this happens, probably because we're too focused on playing the right notes instead of hearing the piece itself.

That's because at that slow a tempo, you start focusing on the letters of the word instead of the word itself.  Letters have no meaning, but words do.

To expand on this idea, it's important to know that sentences convey ideas, not words separately.  This is why some musicians sound really good, because they speak in sentences, not words, so you hear the whole idea in one phrase.
