Play Count Fraud

I'm curious if anyone here has ever tried using play count fraud as a legitimate way to help promote their music?

It seems like quite an effective method of becoming a commercially successful musician.

Do you think it is morally "wrong" to buy fake popularity in order to generate real popularity? Or do you think it is just clever?

Discuss!  :)

People have been doing it for years. Pop bands used to go out and buy their own records so that they would "chart" and then get airplay.
