Etudes
on: March 28, 2014, 01:45:56 AM
Hey everybody! I was wondering if you could help me find some etudes that are around my level of playing. Right now I'd say I play in between a grade 10 RCM and an ARCT level, but I REALLY need to work on my technique. I am currently working through some of the Dohnanyi and Brahms exercises and the pieces I'm working on are:

-Bach: Prelude and Fugue in A Minor (BWV 889)
-Debussy: Prelude Book 2 No. 2, "Feuilles mortes"
-Ann Southam: "Rivers V" (3rd Set)

and I just finished performing:

-Robert Muczynski: Six Preludes
-Messaien: Vingt Regards pour l'Enfant-Jésus, no.3 (L'énchange)

I really would love to develop my technique and I really love late-romantic, impressionistic, and 20th century music. Please leave your suggestions below I would love to hear them!

Take a look at that thread.

Have you played any Chopin Etudes yet?

Don't play Chopin, everyone plays Chopin (and then tell each other they're not doing it right)

If you like later music (as it seems you do) look at the Debussy Etudes :)

Late-romantic - Liapunov Transcendentals
Impressionistic - Debussy
20th century - Ligeti

All will be an interesting challenge, in differing ways.

I'm debating between the Debussy Etude no. 11 (Pour les arpèges composés) or the Ligeti Etude no. 8 (Fém)

I only know book 1 of Ligeti (no.4 Fanfares is a fun one), but if you like and can handle one of his Etudes, my vote would always go to that  ;D

Debussy 11 is beautiful but overplayed!

The Liapunov is also a good suggestion, but the score is bloody expensive!

There's a contemporary composer Karen Tanaka who wrote a set called "Techno Etudes" which might also appeal to you if you like the Ligeti.

Ditto on the Tanaka nod, that chic is rad.

Also look at Saygun etudes on Askak rhythms
