East asian piano pieces
on: March 28, 2014, 07:57:16 PM
Hello. Sorry if this isn't in the right board, but I hope it is. I was wondering if anyone knows of any east asian piano pieces/composers, preferably around a "level 6" difficulty. To be more specific, not new age stuff like Yiruma, but more, for a lack of better term, classical. Not even sure if such a thing even exists with the differences between eastern and western music, so I guess even if it's not something actually from east asia, but just has more of an oriental sound to it would be nice.

Thanks!

There is a CD, Japonisme, and is performed by pianist Noriko Ogawa who plays Japanese inspired music.

Here's the playlist:
Gil-Marchex: Deux Images du vieux Japon
Szántó: In Japan
Niemann: Japan, Op.89
Saint-Saëns: Overture to the Opera 'La Princesse jaune', Op.30
Scott: Soirée japonaise, Op.67 No.4
Silas: Tokio, Japanese March
Poldini: Étude japonaise, Op.27 No.2
Grainger: Arrival platform Humlet
Ketèlbey: From a Japanese Screen

Off the top of my head (I don't know what Level 6 means so I'm just mentioning easier ones)

Takemitsu: Clouds, Breeze, Romance
Tan Dun: Eight Memories in Watercolor

I "suspect" the kind of music you are looking for is (traditional) folk tunes/songs transcribed/re-written by local composers.

There are three websites (but you probably need to use google translate or other tools if you don't know their languages).

[Chinese] https://www.gangqinpu.com/
[Japanese] https://www.piano.or.jp/
[Japanese / English] https://www.zen-on.co.jp/world/composers/

I am not sure if level 6 as mentioned by you belongs to the US system.  Is it intermediate level?

A composer who's name starts with Wang(a modern classical composer of China) transcribed many pieces but maybe 8+ level including:
Chinese: Dragon Lantern Tune(Maybe "grade" 6? No idea, really. Just skimmed the music)
    Japanese: Sakura Sakura(8+)
He also composed himself. For example,
100 Birds Pay Hommage to the Phoenix.
I have no idea if my English translations are correct or not.

Rimsky-Korsakov: I don't know if this is actually Indian, but I doubt it. "Song of India"
Tchaikovsky : Almost same case. "Arabian Dance". Sounds like Xinjiang province music, so maybe it DOES sound a little "oriental".
