Best set of Chopin works?
on: April 11, 2014, 06:31:51 PM
I have 3 disks of Chopin but they're on disks that came with an old part work from the 90s (Classical Collection) so they aren't the best. But what is a good set of disks covering his preludes and etudes? I'm not too bothered about historical recordings in mono, and it  doesnt have to be the newest recordings; I want good sound quality. 1960s stereo would be good enough.
Who is best interpreter of Chopin?

I haven't recorded the Preludes yet but my recording of the Etudes has so far been quite well-received:

I am not saying who's the best but Pollini's sets are certainly worth owning.

Who is best interpreter of Chopin?

There is no best, every interpret has different feelings for the music. Who you like depends on with who you can connect the best and with who you have the closest feelings.

I strongly felt for Martha Argerich-she has only a few recordings on youtube, but most of them are damn good. The next one is Ivan Moravec, maybe the best recording of ballades and scherzos for me. And if we're talking about the etudes-don't know why, but I can hear something special in recording of Lukas Geniusas.
Bach-Prelude and Fugue 2
Mozart-Sonata 545
Schubert-Klavierstucke D946 - 1, 2
Chopin-Etude 10/9, 25/12
Liszt-Un Sospiro
Rachmaninoff-Prelude 23/5, 3/2

For some reason I really love Sokolov's rendition of the preludes. I also don't think there is something in interpretation such as "best" as every interpreter reveals different aspects of the work. May we talk better about tastes?

I have the urgue the ask for a review, that's not from a member of this site.
I mean, if you say that your recordings have the same standards as Vasary or Pollini, then there should be some reviews, right?

Are you kidding?  Sokolov?  I'm listening to the Preludes right now and that's not the way Chopin's music should sound.  Noticeable rubato and hesitations abound in his interpretation.  Chopin explicitly condemned such acoustic theatrics.  This kind of performance is what makes me dislike Chopin's music so much, not because the music is bad but because the interpretations are bad.

Yes, we should talk about better taste. ;)

What about using ears?

Does a recording need to be equated with that of well known pianist in order to be validated?  Listen.  If you like it, then you like it.
Made a Liszt. Need new Handel's for Soler panel & Alkan foil. Will Faure Stein on the way to pick up Mendels' sohn. Josquin get Wolfgangs Schu with Clara. Gone Chopin, I'll be Bach

Who is best interpreter of Chopin?

Some pieces i find best played by Zimmerman, others by Argerich, or Sokolov, or Horowitz... Some passages best by Yundi Li or Lang Lang (as long as i dont have to watch him) and so on.

And because it seems i have my own ideas about Chopin and how it should sound, i have to call myself the best interpreter, at least to my opinion  ::)

Arrau, Zimerman, Pollini, Argerich, Rubinstein, Perahia and rarely Biret. Which piece to which pianist is quite obvious  :D

Well now, that wasn't really the point.
The point was, that the OP wrote "Who is [considered] the best?", and Mr. O, said that his recording of the etudes were very well received.
All I asked was a review, since they are so critically acclaimed.

If someone asks for the best recording, and someone said "Oh, mine. MINE!!!", then, you know..

In my opinion Witold Małcużyński (August 10, 1914 – July 17, 1977) was one of the very best interpreters of Chopin.

His Chopin Piano Concerto No.2 with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1960 with Walter Susskind conducting is the very best interpretation I have ever heard.
It is pure poetry and his timing and touch are awe inspiring!
Bach was no pioneer; his style was not influenced by any past or contemporary century.
He was completion and fulfillment in itself, like a meteor which follows its own path.

Hi:

What a great question!

First, as others have commented, getting a "set," meaning, one pianist plays everything, in my opinion is not a good idea.  After much research, I have found the following to be the best choices:

Chopin Etudes

Ragna Schirmer (Only recorded Op 10)
Yuki Matsuzawa
Louis Lortie
Nikolay Lugansky

Chopin Preludes

Irina Zaritzkaya
Rafal Blechacz
Nikolay Lugansky

Nocturnes:

Claudio Arrau
Vladimir Ashkenazy

Waltzes:

Dmitri Alexeev

Hope this helps.
