If you go to IMSLP and look at the complete preludes, they have the first edition online. The first 4 sixteenth notes are slightly different than any other edition. Anyone know the story? It sounds good that way.

This is a characteristic found exclusively on the first German edition (and propagated later to the Peter's Scholz edition). According to Jan Ekier (critical notes of the Polish National Edition), Chopin hadn't any control nor ever saw the German edition printed (so he couldn't correct errors as he did on the French editions) so it's reasonable to think that this variant is not Chopin's authentic and it may exist due to a German engraver's mistake.
