Someone hacked my account!
on: April 20, 2014, 12:04:51 AM
Hi all,

It seems that I've read all 197 pages of the student's corner! All the "NEW" blue rectangles on that particular forum are missing! The other boards SEEM to be operating normally. Performance, repertoire, teaching are all there and working normally. So, what happened to MY student's corner? Is anybody else having this very weird problem?

Thank you, Joe.

P.S. Could someone report this to the moderator? It would not let me do this. Furthermore, it says it that doesn't make sense. Maybe I need to PM an administrator?

I don't know. But on the top line there is the option "Mark Read", which marks all the posts on a forum as read. Maybe you hit that when you meant to click on something else?

Hi gregh,

Thank you for responding. I must have clicked on that, "MARK READ" button. Does anyone have any clue why that button should function like that? I mean, WHY? why would anyone want to mark the whole entire enchilada as being read, so easily, so effortlessly?

Anyway, is there anyway to undo this faux pas? Also, how can I remove that "GLITCH" from ever happening again? Is there some sort of restore function that can return my account back to a previous date? If not, how can I mark the whole entire forum as unread? That strangely enough, doesn't seem possible.

Thank you, Joe.

That's a very useful feature. You read what seems interesting and mark the rest read, so next time you come around you will only see topics with new messages when you click on "show unread posts after last visit"

There's another forum I visit that kind of does it automatically for you--when you come back an hour later whatever you hadn't read is marked as read. I suppose it's better to have some control over it. I never hit that button, myself. I don't read everything here, but I look for the break in the "new" tags to give me a clue where I'd left off.

Someone probably came along and read all those posts while using your account.

Take a look at your last pasts.  They list the ip address on each post.

Hi all,

I never gave it much thought, but now that I have, I have come to realize that the many different users of pianostreet use the forums in many different ways.

Personally, I think of the "NEW" blue rectangles as UNREAD and not new at all. There are 10 year old posts marked new which obviously, are not new. They are marked "NEW" because they are NEW TO ME which translates to UNREAD BY ME!

I gather that, "gregh" who looks for the breaks in the new tags uses the forums in the same manner as I do. Furthermore, he states that he NEVER uses that button himself.

I find that function not useful at all, but in fact, DESTRUCTIVE, harmful if you will. It is, for me anyway, like someone stole my bookmark from the book I have been reading. So, my place is lost, gone forever. I'm sure there are many others who feel this way.

I suppose, other users, mark the whole entire forum as having been read (which for the life of me, I still don't understand why?) and sort of like reading the newspaper, read the current events of the day. This turns the "NEW" tabs into just that. They no longer serve to distinguish what you read and what you didn't. They become, JUST, what has been relatively recently, posted, depending on when your last visit to pianostreet was.

I use the forum in at least 3 rather common ways:

1. I search the forums. Yes, there are some who are too lazy or are JPS and don't do this.
2. I peruse the first page for new topics.
3. I am reading the forum, the MANY different approaches, opinions and ideas in general to further my studies.

I DON'T ONLY read what is immediately useful to me. When someone takes the time to post, I read it. If they mention a piece, I go to YouTube and listen to it to make more sense out of the post.

Anyway that's just some of what I do, Joe.

I don't get your point really  ??? There is an fast way to find things I have not read. On this forum it works better than most others I am on, which is one of the reasons I like it here.

I usually read all new posts and threads on one sitting, it doesn't take much time really. I did go through most of the interesting old stuff when I joined the forum. If I need something again there are several ways to find it. If there are interesting links, something to read with better time or something to listen to in the posts, those go to my desktop as a reminder to return to them later.

I like to have a systematic approach to information, whether work or leasure  ;)
